Expectations of group participants:

  • Safety

  • Work and fun

  • Community

  • Respect

  • Kindness

  • Choice

Slurs will not be tolerated

I am offering groups for three age groups

9-13 year olds:

Wednesdays, 5:30p-7:00p

14-17 year olds:

Sundays, 2:30p-4:00p

18+ year olds:

Mondays, 7:00p-8:30p

All groups held at Fort Sumner Park (64 North St in Portland) to start

Activities in each group will be similar to the other groups offered but more appropriate for the folks in that age range. Activities stem from games learned when working at camp as a camp counselor, experiential activities I was trained in as a group therapist, and expressive art inspired activities I have found meaningful and enjoyable. All materials will be provided and groups are come as you want.

Pricing: $5+ (whatever feels right) per attendee

The main reason I started this business was to run groups for those in the community who might not have access to mental health support otherwise. Running groups has been my favorite part of the work I have done working with youth. It is amazing to be able to see how interactions can impact our self-view as well as our view of the world.

4C Group Features

Games

Games are silly— expectations in 4C groups include open-mindedness to being silly and not judging others for being too silly or not silly enough. The games are inspired from camp games I learned while I grew up as well as ones I used when running groups at the residential I worked at. The games utilize problem solving aspects in a low-stress environment while also encouraging communication and interaction among peers. There is always opportunity to pause throughout for conversation and realizations as needed.

Game examples:

  • make up a short skit (30sec-90sec) based on a random sentence

  • have you ever (version of never have I ever mixed with musical chairs)

  • charades (actor picks two cards: an activity and an emotion)

  • gravity ball

Creative Activities

Allowing yourself to engage in art that helps with processing and reflection can be eye-opening. This past year, I have been challenging myself to create something that people would look at and say, “you did a bad job, that is some bad artwork.” It is actually challenging to work on making bad art and takes me more effort than jumping into attempting a style of art that scares you. Art activities that will be used will be in the form of prompts as well as making space to individually create. Collaborative expressive activities also start with a prompt and encourage folks to interact to communicate needs as they are generating a creative expression together.

Artistic activity examples:

  • create collaborative collage by adding things with peers to express a prompt

  • post it props trade

  • more of/less of brain dump

  • design a season of life music album

Outdoor Adventures

We will be doing the majority of groups outside (for at least part of the time) and I love incorporating nature into elements of groups. Outdoor initiatives include invitations to create representations made out of materials around them as well as practicing grounding elements by using their senses while remaining present. Group games and creative projects will also be done outdoors when possible. Staying outdoors for activities allows for appreciating natural elements around us as well as practicing flexibility with weather changes and pieces of discomfort that might be experienced.

Outside excursion activity examples:

  • write a hope on tissue paper and light it on fire and watch it fly away

  • metaphor of a need built out of things around you

  • grounding color scavenger hunt

  • create a character based on something found in nature
